Banana bread has really grown on me in my adult years. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I liked it when I was a kid but I didn’t like, live for it, you know?

Nowadays, give me a good banana bread and I’m pretty happy about it!

But also, I don’t always want a full loaf hanging around. With two people in our household, it’s sometimes better to have small batches of baked goods.

Which is why I decided to come up with this small batch mini loaf banana bread recipe!

This recipe makes two mini size loaves- about 5-6 ish inches.

And there’s chocolate chips! Because, yay chocolate!

It’s a perfect recipe for some weekend baking fun, and great for smaller families or households. With two small loaves, you can eat one now and freeze the other for later.

Or, keep one for you and share one with a friend. Or promise said friend a loaf, eat them both “accidently”, and then make another batch so you can give them one of those loafs. And still have one more for yourself.

Go ahead- we don’t judge here. Especially not when it comes to banana bread!

How to Make Mini Loaves of Banana Bread

What Ingredients Do You Need?

  • ¼ cup vegetable oil
  • ¼ cup plain yogurt
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 ½ ripe bananas (about 5-5.5 oz.)
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup all purpose flour
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • ½ tsp baking soda
  • ¼ tsp salt
  • ¼ cup chopped nuts, (optional)
  • ⅓ cup mini chocolate chips

You can substitute olive oil if you would like for the vegetable oil, but be aware that the taste may change just a bit. For the yogurt, I used non-fat Greek yogurt, but any plain yogurt should do fine.

Make sure your bananas are ripe! They should be pretty brown for the recipe, so they are sweet enough. Nuts and chocolate chips are optional of course, but I highly recommend them! You can use any chopped nuts you like- I used walnuts.

What Equipment Do You Need to Make Banana Bread Mini Loaves?

Other Recipe Notes:

What if I don’t have mini loaf pans?

You can make muffins! Divide the batter evenly among the cups of your muffin tin and bake- keep an eye on them as they may bake quicker! Start checking them at about 20 minutes of baking time and bake until they are cooked through.

How do I store these banana bread mini loaves?

You can leave them on the counter for up to four days, in a container. For longer storage, keep in the freezer and defrost when you want to eat it. I like to cut it into slices or portions when I freeze it so I can defrost one at a time instead of a loaf.

What variations can I make on this banana bread recipe?

You can leave out the nuts to make just chocolate chip banana bread or make banana nut bread by taking out the chocolate chips. You can also leave out the chocolate chips and the nuts if you would like to make regular banana bread. Another idea is to substitute something else for the chocolate chips- blueberries are a great choice. Or perhaps you would like to try peanut butter chips or cinnamon baking chips instead of chocolate!

One last thing to mention- If you want to make one loaf with nuts and one without, an easy way to do this is to add the nuts after the batter has been added to the pans.

Just divide the batter equally into the two prepared loaf pans, then sprinkle one pan with 2 tbsp of chopped nuts. Swirl the nuts into the batter and mix around gently with a spoon. Then bake as directed!

These banana bread mini loaves are soooo good, we ate them very quickly around here! I love having the small-batch option, and I was able to save one of my mini loaves to put in the freezer for later.
